SM Subject: Request to Allow Hoosier RCES Tire in Spec Miata – 2027
In GCR, Section 9.1.7.6.C.b., add the following Effective 10/1/2026: "Hoosier dry P205/50/ZR15 SM7.5 or P205/50/ZR15 Hoosier RCES" In GCR, Section 9.1.7.6.C., add the following Effective 10/1/2026: "d. Competitors may not mix and match the different dry compound tires. Tires must all match and be run in complete sets." In GCR, Section 9.1.7.6.C.c.1., add the following Effective 10/1/2026: "SM cars are limited to one set of Hoosier SM 7.5 or RCES P205/50/ZR15 per Hoosier Super Tour event & Runoffs weekends for all dry qualifying and race sessions. This limitation does not include testing or practice sessions. Approved rain tires will not be required to be marked."
Safety is of the utmost importance to all of us on the SMAC and while we sympathize with your position we must look out for all competitors and evaluate the impacts, costs and perceptions of letters sent through the system. We have several engineers on the SMAC and after evaluating pictures of the proposed changes to the foot box, unfortunately SMAC does not feel this would be a good thing for the class as we cannot definitely determine that this would be safer or even less safe. Comparing the RA crash pictures to the proposed fix to a bare chassis we cannot determine that the proposed changes actually make the foot box safer. Barring an extensive and expensive crash test simulation SMAC has no way of determining if the changes are actually safer or less safe. There are some positions that believe that with less crumple zone it would transfer even

more energy through to the driver potential causing even more injuries. In the pictures your crash, the foot box appears to have crumpled further back than where your new proposed plates are located. SMAC’s directive also does not allow us to make safety determinations as to what may or may not be safer for a competitor. In the interest of your and Danny’s situation SMAC is proposing to RRCC that a one-time allowance for you both would be acceptable given your medical condition, but to allow for everyone when we have no way of determining if it is helping or hurting is not the really something we think would be right for the class.
Thank you for your letter. SMAC will request that Mazda take the reccomendation to Penske to modify the shock shaft. The requested modification may come with a price increase so the request will need to be evaluated once/if any increase amount is established.
Thank you for your letter. SMAC received several requests on this topic and chose to put out a survey to the 2024 HST Spec Miata entrants. Overwhelmingly the responses were for implementing tire limiting for all HST events in 2025. Based on these responses SMAC has submitted this recommendation to CRB for approval.
Thank you for your letter. Item # 1 in your letter has been addressed by SMAC. Please see response to letter #36985. The remainder of the items in your letter fall in to the control of Topeka with the team that makes the business decisions and negotiates the tire contracts for the club. They are aware of the concerns you have in your letter and will be taking them into account as the contract negotiations continue.
HST events will have a modified qualifying format to mitigate the perception some drivers may have about having to skip qualifying sessions or laps to minimize sessions or laps on tires at tire limited events. These changes will be monitored and adjusted as needed.
For the 2023 Hoosier Super Tour Events, we will be implementing the tire limiting program for Sebring, VIR, and the June Sprints. The intent is to continue working toward a tire limiting program at all HST events for 2024. By starting with 3 events in 2023, it allows all involved to ease into the program and work with the community to create a process that is beneficial for all involved. We will continue to request feedback from these 3 events to assist in making the 2024 decision. The 3 HST events in 2023 will follow a similar manual tire marking process to what was used at the 2022 June Sprints. The SMAC committee wishes to thank all of those racers, members, and staff involved in 2022 who helped get us to this position. All requirements and program specifics will be listed in the supplemental regulations for each of the 3 events.
SM Request to Add a VVT Representation to the SMAC
Thank you for your letter. SMAC is currently accepting resumes and conducting interviews for applicants with VVT experience and anticipate adding a new member with VVT experience in 2021.

After careful consideration of the tire limiting proposal and the official results of the March 2019 What Do You Think (WDYT) the SMAC has chosen not to recommend the tire limiting proposal at this time. There were multiple factors that the SMAC considered when coming to this conclusion: • The overall response rate to the WDYT via the letter system was low; suggesting that tire limiting may not be a priority to a large proportion of the Spec Miata community. • Responses were not overwhelmingly in favor of tire limiting. Responses varied greatly, with approximately one third in favor of the tire limiting proposal, one third suggesting their own

proposals, and one third not in favor of tire limiting. • The ongoing development of the Hoosier SM8 may yield a better solution. • The possible redistribution of the 2021 Hoosier contingency program could alleviate some tire costs to a greater number of participants.
T3 Request to allow SD radiator in T3 Mazdaspeed Miata
Thank you for your letter. Effective 1/1/19: In SM, GCR section 9.1.7.c.2.i, revise and add wording as follows: “The half-shaft CV Joints shall be an OEM or OEM equivalent part. The internal cage and bearing dimensions are unrestricted. This rule is effective until 12/31/18.” “Rear drive axle assembly consisting of constant velocity Joints (inner and outer), axle shafts, boots and all associated parts that make up a complete drive axle assembly must be an OEM part. All internal component dimensions are un-restricted but must be ferrous material.” In SM, GCR section 9.1.7.c, add the wording as follows:
